Atlanta re-signs award winning goaltender

Duluth, GA – Award winning goaltender Sean Bonar has been re-signed by the Atlanta Gladiators. The 28-year-old, Canadian born Bonar, hails from Delta, British Columbia and has been part of the Gladiators squad for the last two seasons. Sean comes off a very successful season with the Glads that included recently winning the Eastern Conference “Game Saving Goalie” award. The honor is voted on by the Professional Hockey Players Association (PHPA), which are Bonar’s peers.

“He is an amazing person, a great leader, as well as a great team guy”, said Coach Pyle.

Bonar began his college career as an Ivy-League goalie for Princeton for four seasons. After his time with the Tigers his pro career began in 2014-15, playing in both the ECHL and Southern Professional Hockey League in his first year.  In the ECHL he played for both the Indy Fuel and the Orlando Solar Bears, while with the SPHL Sean was with the Fayetteville FireAntz.

The following year in 2015-16, Bonar was back in the ECHL, where he spent time with three different teams, the Fort Wayne Komets, Brampton Beast and the Fayetteville FireAntz.  It was in his second go around with Fayetteville, where his career made a significant turn and began to take off.  Sean wound go a very respectable 9-3-0 and had 1.89 goals against average, with a .936 save percentage.

During the next season in 2016-17, while playing in the SPHL, he had the best year of his career, posting an impressive 32-15-2 record and a 2.07 GAA, while turning away a league leading 92.7% of the shots he faced. It was in this season he became an elite goalie. Sean was a First-Team All-Star, was named Goaltender of the Year and was the league’s MVP, who says a goalie can’t score a hat trick!

In 2017-18, he again split time again between the SPHL and the ECHL. In the SPHL he was with the Pensacola Ice Flyers and went 4-0-0 with a 1.25 GAA.  It was in the ECHL that year that Bonar would first become a member of the Atlanta Gladiators, putting up a 13-10-2 record and a 2.69 GAA.

Last year, he returned to the Gladiators going 23-17-6 and sported a 2.41 GAA. Sean also spent some time during the 2018-19 at the highest level of minor league hockey with the AHL affiliate of the Gladiators, the Providence Bruins.

Bonar said on coming back this season, “I’m extremely excited to have the opportunity to come back. I thought we came close to accomplishing the goals we set last year.  We were as hot as any other team in the league in the second half, so there are a lot of positives we can take from last season. I’m glad to be back to help us make another run.”
